 字母 l, m, n 是三个“强辅音”(女强人)，还有字符 st, th，有时它们能够使其左邻的元音字母 a, i, o 读“名称音”或是其他“长元音”。

字母 l:   ild old  olt olk roll all  alk  alt ald  alm

---child, mild, wild  例外：gild, build  
——old, cold, gold, hold,bold, fold, sold, told, scold 责骂, soldier n.士兵, behold, uphold, unfold ,bolt, volt,folk, yolk 蛋黄
——roll, poll, knoll, scroll, enroll, control 控制  toll, scroll 
——但是请注意 doll, solder n. & v.锡焊 的重读元音为短元音。 
all,ball, call, fall, hall, tall, wall, mall, small, stall, recall, befall = 发生；落到 此外，还有 rainfall, snowfall, waterfall, downfall, nightfall, Great Wall 等等。 

只有单词 shall 的元音为短元音。
——walk, talk, chalk, balk = 障碍；挫折, calk = 鞋钉bald 秃顶, scald 烫伤salt, halt, malt 麦芽糖  bald,  always walnut 

使字母 a 读 [a:] ： calm, palm, balm, Psalm(圣经中的)《诗篇》

字母 m 

————chamber, chambermaid, Chamberlain = 张伯伦

---------但是注意，有时元音字母仍旧读它们各自的“短音”，如：lamb, limb。

在英式英语中，以下单词中的字母 a 也读 [a:] ：
fast, last, past, cast, mast, vast, forecast 预报, broadcast, telecast，pass, class, glass, grass

————paste, taste, waste, chaste, haste, baste, tasty, pastry 糕饼, 
————bass 低音部 


字母  th ：
——both, sloth n. 懒情, clothing
——但是请注意 cloth, moth 的重读元音为短元音。 
——father, rather 

m,n,v有时能使前面的o读 u 的短音

come, become, income, outcome, some, none, done, overdone, love, glove, above, dove 等。   
Monday,  month,  won,  wonderful,  London,  front,  oven,  onion,  comfortable,  company,  accompany 等。   

 单词 one ，在词首无中生有地加了一个 w 音。所以单词 one 与单词 won 的读音相同。在单词 one 和 once 词首加一个 w 音的作法在英文中是一个绝无仅有的特例。

 在弱读音节中，词尾的“-le”起着元音的作用。 

1. 在单词 table(桌子), bugle(军号), simple(简单的) 和 single(单独的)中，它们的第二个音节属于 弱读音节，此时“-le”起着元音的作用。其读音为 dark-l 。 
---- table 的读音为 'ta-ble ； 
---- bugle 的读音为 'bu-gle。 
---- simple 的读音为 'sim-ple ； 
---- single 的读音为 'sing-gle。 

2. 同样，单词 people(人民)，它的第二个音节也属于 弱读音节。 
---- people 的读音为 'peo-ple。 
---- 其中 peo 按照“两个相异的元音字母在一起，左边的当家”的原则读音：字母 e 读“名称音”，字母 o 没有读音。
